MAEVE

“Hey, are you two naked?”

I slitted my left eye open and made out a figure in the doorway to my bedroom. “Sibby? What are you doing here?” A glance at the clock told me that it was well after midnight.

Gimli and Grogu bounded off the bed, barking like we were being invaded. There was bouncing, yapping, and enough hair being shed to knit an Afghan. A cavalcade of corgi crazy.

“What?” Kal rolled over, tossing the blanket off and exposing what was underneath to our intruder.

“Woah, Kal is totally naked. That is something I can’t unsee. Does that count as cheating?” Sibby was more hyper than usual. A bad sign. The more irreverent her words, the more likely she was freaking out. The fact that she hadn’t bothered to call before popping by confirmed it.

“Sibby,” I snarled.

“Were you guys doing some kinky fuckery? I swear to chocolate if an octopus slithers out of that bed—”

“Out!” I pointed at the door. Just because she was losing it didn’t mean I had to put up with it. “Wait for me downstairs. And take the dogs with you.”

She tossed off a salute, whistled for the corgis, and blessedly, shut the door without another word.

“What’s up?” Kal asked as I swung my legs out of bed and reached for the bedside lamp.

“Not sure but it isn’t good. Are you on at the resort today?”

“Yeah.” He glanced at the clock. “In about four and a half hours.”

Shit. “Fine, I’ll take the kids and the dogs.”

“You sure?”

It would be chaos, but we didn’t have another option. I reached for my hoodie and a pair of yoga pants. “Meet us over at Witch Way after your shift. And be careful.”

“You too.”

After stowing my phone in the sweatshirt pocket, I slipped into the bathroom to empty my bladder. Since I could still hear dog nails clicking on the floor, I figured Sibby hadn’t gone downstairs. Quietly as I could, I slipped out of the room, shut the door, and then turned to face my sister.

“You look like hell, Sibby.”

“Gee, thanks ever so much.” She ran a hand through hair that hadn’t seen a brush in days. “And how come I can never get a reaction out of Kal? No matter what I say he’s just so…stoic.”

“Because unlike me, Alys, and everyone else in a thirty-mile radius, Kal knows that if he gives you feedback you only get worse.”

At the sound of our sister’s name, her face fell. “I can’t find Alys. Scrying isn’t working and Brock’s not able to track her over long distances. We’re officially on full five-alarm witchy alert.”

I rubbed a hand over my eyes. “All right. I need to take Bella, Philip, the dogs, and the Maevemobile.”

“Maeve,” Sibby began to protest but I held up a hand.

“I know you want to find her. So do I.” I decided not to tell Sibby about Bella’s freak-out. It would only upset her more. “Take the dogs and the Maevemobile while I get the kids up and packed. Their leashes should be on the hook by the kitchen door.
